BarFly's Review of Trader Vic's
If you can't get laid after taking your date to Trader Vic's, you're either dead, or may as well be. While the terms 'corporate chain' will strike fear and loathing in the heart of any proper Portlander, especially when coupled with the gag-reflex inducing, 'Pearl District,' one swig off the signature Mai Tai will have you occupying bar stools here on a regular basis.
It doesn't hurt a bit that their bar stools are wide-ass-comfortable, oases unto themselves, nor that both the Coconut Shrimp, and the service, vie for 'best in town.' The mise-en-scene is pure Forties-style tiki-riffic, loaded with deep booths, o'er which hang all the requisite South Seas tropes - masks, thatched roofs, outrigger canoes, etc. All in all, it makes for a nice taste of tropical splendor, Rat Pack-style.
It bears noting, the 'new Trader Vic's' is new only to those who can't remember all the way back to the halcyon days of yore - the original Portland outpost was located for decades, where El Gaucho is today, neath the Benson Hotel, before closing, c. 2001.
Open 3pm-11pm Sunday-Thursday, 3pm-12am Friday and Saturday. Brunch 10am-2pm Saturday and Sunday.
Monday nights: $5 Mai Tais. Happy hour prices all night with O.L.C.C. or F.H card.
