BarFly's Review of Wynne's (CLOSED)
Now closed. Please see our listing for KJ's bar and grill
Imagine the back-room's gigantic round table, cigarette-scarred and warped though it may be, as the heart of Wynne's - whether hosting downmarket housewife Cosmo klatches, idling hipsters working their cells for afterparties, or just a thrown-together batch of diehard area loyalists (themselves a bit warped and cigarette-scarred). There's surprisingly good diner selections in the booth-filled restaurant area, alongside pool, and a big screen rarely glanced at beyond football season, while a larger, adjoining room hosts well-liquored weekend karaoke. Two words: PUDDING SHOTS! Nature’s perfect food was thunk up right here on the premises by their genius cook. $2 each, in an ever-changing variety of flavors. $1.75 domestics, $3 micros, $2.25 well + 50 cents off appetizer menu 4-6pm M-F & Sat/Sun 9am-11am. Tuesdays: Ladies get happy hour prices all night long (7pm-close). Thursdays: Men get happy hour prices all night long (7pm-close).
As of the week of August 21, 2007, Wynne's is no longer Wynne's. A new owner has acquired it. I haven't been there yet to know what the new name will be or what changes may be in store.
It was just a matter of time for Wynne's. I rarely saw anyone in one of the two rooms – only if there was a band or other event. And you can't really make a go of it if half of your place is empty. The side with the bar was usually filled after work with the regulars and good luck getting a seat at the bar then. Later in the evening, the whole place was mostly deserted.
Hope new owner does better, as this could be quite a happening location.
