BarFly's Review of Yakuza Lounge

Are we alone in being nervous when big burnished slabs of wood, thicker than the tables' also thick slabs, hang over our heads with lights inside them? Does no one else look up? Is this a metaphor? Perhaps their solidity is an illusion.

The room is fuck-me-sleek, but demurely bemuraled, low-lit against panels of garage-door-paneled windows, and, sadly, filled with Concordia’s new pasty face: first-homers who couple-jog every morning with yappy pups on leash, who bravely or foolishly bike with tent-caboosed babies on tow ropes.

Gone are the plush happy hours that got you out of bed, hungover, for a cheapish Sunday-afternoon brunch of burger and tuna roll.

Aside from the quiet domestic self-congratulation, this is now where shark-toothed gentlemen take out their junior account rep or upmarket hipster on a relaxed first date, order OK sushi and Kobe beef, lean back, let the $8 whiskey marinate deep into the reptile brain, and wait for the pleasures to come.
