BarFly's Review of Black Cat Pub
Imagine a fog of cigarette smoke drawn from a mixed crowd ranging from displaced indie rockers and Sellwood cat ladies to the roving packs of old timers playing all-too-intense rounds of long table shuffleboard. The antique-district landmark’s famously cranky staff and beer-sign-laden interiors give way every summer to the horseshoe pit, BYO meat grill and honest-to-God gazebo of the bar’s sprawling backyard. Which still, somehow, seems smoky.

The bartenders can definitely rub a person the wrong way, although most of their banter is in playful fun. Of course, if you happen to be someone that deserves to get a tongue lashing, this is not the place to go. The place is a great location for shuffleboard, has one pool table, and a variety of other games to enjoy. The food is not top-of-the-line, but if you were expecting great food go to Ringside and grab a 30 dollar steak. This is a dive, don't be surprised when you arrive. And how many places do you know that allow you to bring in your own meat and cook it up??
Everyone saying the bartenders are biatches: they are either messing around with you, or youre an idiot who deserves to be yelled at, ie the pack of drunk frat guys who stopped in and made themselves bleed on the punching bag arcade game. The shuffleboard tables and pool tables arent in pristine shape or anything, but my girlfriend and I stop by here at least once a week. Beer is beer, they just got an internet jukebox, albet it is expensive. The food is decent for the price...I mean, cmon, a HUGE burrito for 2 bucks (very tasty). All in all, Black Cat is definitely a place to try out. I can totally agree with the person who said it was a black hole...it will suck you in and not let you out :)
Not only is this place the BEST dive I've ever been to, but one thing that stands out...The women's restroom is FABULOUS! It's clean and I'm not terrified to pee in there! You actually hear an angel's choir when you open the door. Momma is the best and her staff is awesome! She's got some class-act broads working for her. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone wanting a fun place to hang out.
The yelling ladies are the best part of a night at the Black Cat! If you are a guy - watch out - you might get spanked with a hairbrush! (Happened to my cuz - what a hottie!) Sign up for shuffleboard, listen to some hits on the jukebox and avoid the dried up lil' smokies or "make your own tacos" food specials! (They'll throw out some tubs o food for you to scoop out your own fixin's -eew!)
To all those that trash this place, just shut up. For the love of God, you're a bunch of little bitches. If you can't get that the yelling bartenders is part of the whole shtick, then you probably aren't ready to drink in public. For the rest of you that are up for having a good time at a great neighborhood bar, then check it out. You won't be disappointed.
I'll go to this bar if I must. I had a friend that used to take me here, and actually liked the place too. The bartenders are all rude and obnoxious and they only have beer to offer. The food is horrible, if available, and the bar is always full of smoke. Most of the time the bartender is too busy ranting and raving to some old regulars to notice you have been waiting at the bar for a drink. When they do notice they don't usually give a shit anyway. The pool tables are wrecked but apparently the shuffleboard tables are cool. I don't play shuffleboard so I couldn't say but everything else about this place sucks.
I love shuffleboard, and I love pool; The Black Cat has both, and I refuse to go there. This is one of the worst bars I have ever been to due to the simple fact that the bartenders (seemingly all of them) have the charisma of a leper covered in shit. They are the worst bartenders I have ever seen. Simply being within 20 feet of them is enough to make you want to leave. Save yourself some time and do the good deed of driving that shitty bar out of business by not attending.
I wasted almost entire year getting drunk in the Black Cat.
I knew it was time to leave when Mama knew my name.
this place would be alright if it wasn't infested by fucking yuppies. they're terrified of the bartender (you know who i'm talking about) yet they cannot avoid the place due to their addiction to shuffleboard.
This place is actually a family legend, I go there with my mom, aunt, cousins and friends regularly. This is the place to be!! I love the staff, they keep you on edge! Anyone who doesnt like this place doesnt have a sense of humor. :)
Are you people smoking rocks ? How in gods name you guys connect this bar and 'good' is beyond me. I'll admit the shuffleboard is fun, but the staff are downright fucking rude and the drinks/food are not very good at all. This place might be a good place to go if you're a brain-dead redneck but I can't see why else you would purposely end up there...
This is the best bar in Portland. Cheap beer, good people and a jukebox that never changes. I never get sick of hearing Bon Jovi, Journey, Van Halen, or Jimmy Buffett. Ma has been like a second mother to me - A mother with a 3 pack a day habit and infinite wisdom.
The bartenders are complete assholes which have pissed off most people hwho have gone to this bar at one time or another, but they have shuffleboard tables the only redeeming quality.
Hands down, Black Cat is the best bar in Portland. The review above is spot on - the constantly irritated bartenders (I'm never sure if they're coming on to me or actually threatening my life) call you by name and often curse you out. PBR is the drink of choice and the best (and only?) full-length shuffleboard tables in town are the center of attention. Handmade Costco tacos and microwave popcorn complement the beer and the atmousphere is friendly, as long as you're drinking. If you don't feel the need to show off your bankroll buying pretentious cocktails (none are offered...literally), put on a torn up shirt and show up.
