BarFly's Review of Bye and Bye
Vegan hipster hang on the quickly developing lower end of NE Alberta St with roll-up garage doors, a huge back patio, and a large cement bar. Great jukebox, tons of bike parking, and a staff that's as nice as they are easy on the eyes. The aptly named "Bye and Bye" cocktail, served in a mason jar, is deceivingly light and refreshing while packing a mean punch. Strict vegan menu—meaning no Irish or whipped cream.
Minors welcome til 9pm. -Strack

Getting to Bye and Bye

I have never been treated so rudely in my life. I went to this bar to meet some friends for my birthday. My friends wanted to have something "fun" to drink in celebration. Someone said jello shots- and I know they are silly, but to be mocked by the staff - guy behind the bar told me to go to a "frat bar" and told me he doesn't even think jello shots even exist anymore - that was unnecessary. The bartender yelled at the other bartender-and loudly asks in front of me if he even knew of a bar that did jello shots - being almost completely sober, I asked if he had any suggestions-and he rudely said "no I don't. You have to know what you want and we are not a "shots" kind of bar". I walked away. When my friends finished the drinks they had I walked up and told the bartender that I have never had such poor customer service in my life! He responded with " ive never even seen you before." I told him "You lost five VERY great customers. We just moved to the area- thanks for making my birthday awesome." Oh and the know a few streets down had jello shots and stiff whiskey sours and an amazingly friendly staff-I tipped them 120 percent just because the bye and bye sucked so much.
Drinks are great and good beer selection. Food is just OK but cooking vegan is always a challenge. The clientele is just to snooty and the wait staff seems to have caught the virus also. The last two times I have been in the wait staff acts like they are doing you a favor by serving you. Actually bordering on rude. I don't need to be catered to but a smile and hello would be nice. Oh. And learn to make correct change and don't argue about it when you make a mistake. We wont be back so all you hipsters can have the place to yourself.
great place for a drink or ten, but if you use cash count your change! Seems like they play the "oh I thought that was a 10 not a 20 game."
Pure bull shiite.
The bar staff is nice, the service fine, the food really tasty vegan. My issue is the clientele. After one or two good experiences, the majority since then have been awful. Lots of snooty and very unfriendly hipsters, for lack of a better term. This is so not Portland.
I love their meatlessball sub. It is tasty. The reviewer who said it was bland must have lost his taste buds from too many cheap cigarettes.
I know nothing of their happy hour, but I do know the place gets pretty damn crowded at night. Go for a late lunch and you'll love it. They have some decent wines there, too.
First off, I love the Bye and Bye. They serve up some of the best vegan food in Portland (see my reviews on yelp).
I am mainly posting to let everyone know that the happy hour times on here are incorrect and had I known that, I wouldn't have made it a Sunday day spot.
There happy hour is 4-7 every day of the week. That's it. It's a buck off of entrees (hence the $2-7 bucks) as well as some happy hour items. It's a buck off of most pints and $2. pints of hamms all of the time.
The Bye and Bye is the kind of place that fits perfectly into its neighborhood, great staff, drinks and food even though its vegan. The only cons are the long lines for the restrooms and drinks on busy nights. Be sure to try the "bye and Bye"
My friends and I always joke about this place having a great happy hour if you could get more than one beer in the seven hours that it runs. Boo Hipsters.
I've been a frequent visitor to north portland bars since the days of Chez What & Etcetera Tavern (among others), RIP to both of them. I went into Bye&Bye expecting the worst kind of yuppiness. I was pleasantly surprised by the service, food and drinks. I plan to go again.
went with my brother who lives off Alberta. he's vegan and he loves it but i found the place to be a little too yuppie for me (my brother got angry when i commented on that). On the plus side, the bartenders (who apparently are the owners) seemed chill. boy do i miss the days when Chez What was on alberta ...
I've tried a couple items on the menu (Thai sandwich and meatball sub) and found them to be largely flavorless affairs drenched with nearly painful amounts of hot sauce to cover up the bland. Really not impressed by it. I really want to like this bar's stylish decor-- it really is well done (despite a slight "Ikea" feel to the retroness)-- but it attracts exactly the kind of young hipsters that I can't stand. You'll fit in here if you're an ultra-skinny generic "indie" sort of person (read: yuppie). How it manages to attract people from all over portland (note how the side street parking fills up around the place on weekends since it opened!) I'll never understand, since beyond the fancy decor and uninspired vegan menu it's really got very little in terms of unique offerings.
We love this place, and we aren't even remotely vegan. But, I gotta say, the food is pretty darn great. The staff is the best I have ever possibly seen in Portland, where rude is good service. They are extremely nice, courteous, and prompt. The beer selection is good, and drinks yummy. Haven't really tried the wine selection, but that will be next, as I live right nearby! Lucky Day!
this was a super welcome find. i just moved here from oakland -- the bye and bye is pretty much a cross of kitty's and the stork club (for any of you from the bay area). great beer, good prices, hot and friendly bartenders (and for the record, the service was great). plus it has what every bar needs: snacks. and hamms. and hooks for your bag under the bar.
... the staff. Each one of those boys are sweet, helpfull, well mannered, and hard working. What more could you want? I've been served nothing but tasty and quality drinks there and appriciate that they do a bang up job on every single cocktail even when its crazy busy. My only complaint is the crazy busy part. I loved it when this place first opened and i could actually find a seat. But they work their sweet asses off back there and I enjoy watching every bit of it while I wait my turn. Bye and Bye, I think i'm in love.
Since moving to NE in October this place has become my new watering hole. The design is beautiful top to bottom, the service is ridiculously friendly, and the drinks are worth every penny. It's nice to know my drinking dollars are going to such a nice bunch of guys. Would love to see a few more menu options but otherwise I think this place is pretty much perfect. Everyone I take here agrees.
So I want to love this place and often forget I don't. The first time I went was the best. Really not good for large groups. Each time I've been back I've waited longer for the guy behind the bar to realize someone new is belly up at the bar, thats just a hard impression to get over. Once noticed prompt service follows (last time it took 30 min.). The service is really not good for big groups, which makes it hard to convince my non-vegan boyfriend to take me (he lives on Gladstone and I on Burnside so its a bit of a trek) and bring along a bunch of friends to the VEGAN bar. Besides all this it is a great space. And the service, once obtained, is stellar. Don't let the fact that it's vegan through you its honestly a nice place to sit and get sh*ty, If you're into that. Also nice to grab some food. The sampler with 3 choices is my cheep fav.
just what alberta needed. solid bar. solid staff. open late and the drinks are stiff. patio, parking and non-smoking inside.
