BarFly's Review of Chopsticks Express (CLOSED)
Note: After some twenty years at its present location, Chopsticks Express will be closing as of last call, on Saturday, September 19th, 2015 (yay - more effing condos. Sigh.). Look for the new Chopsticks Express to open at 3390 NE Sandy, on Saturday, September 26th, 2015.
Ignore the name. Chopsticks shouldn't suggest food any more than, say, Moon and Sixpence references a planetarium. Wannabe frontmen and their patient friends crush Chopsticks for stiff drinks and the best karaoke jockeys and sound system 'round Portland. If the crowds tend less toward the rocker contingent of yesteryear, there's still a welcome tendency to avoid the American Idolatry in favor of intriguing choices performed with heart and style. There is a covered smoking patio, you can bring your drinks with you, but there is no heat yet. Still, drinking+smoking is a qualifier.
Open Thanksgiving and Xmas Day at 5pm.
Chopsticks' annual "Stache Bash" is not to be missed. Usually held in early September.
Karaoke Fridays and Saturdays 8:00pm - 2:30am
Sunday - Thursday 8:30pm - 2:30am

In reply to Miss Lovely AleyMay, you're insane, and your repeated postings on anything named "Chopsticks" all over Yelp, Google and here only prove it (Chop II is not the same as Chop III, as you got so confused on Yelp! about). I was there the night you claim to have such issue with the bartender. No, I'm not her, yeah, I know her, yeah, I like her, and yeah, I work for Chop and David Chow (for those of you not involved, you can take her and my opinion for what its worth based on that).
Guess what, Aley (or Allie or whatever fake pseudonym you want to chose for the sites you went to)? You're the bitch.
You were snotty, you were rude, and it was ridiculous. Really? You think you can treat people, especially service industry people in Portland, like you treated the bartender? You think you're justified in acting like a total spoiled C*** just because you're goddamn Princess Diana or something? Did some sort of magic happen and Chopsticks was magically transformed into some high end, hoity-toity bar where you can look down on everyone you come into contact with? It wasn't Vegas, bitch--you went to the Eastside of Portland. Your butler doesn't work here. Just because Dad bought you a pair of tits for graduation doesn't mean the sun shines out your ass.
Actually, what she said to you (after going back and forth with you on, contrary to your delusions, a pretty busy night) was "Okay, let's start over, unless you still want to act like a cunt." And yeah, it sucked you got spit at, but how do you know that big girl knew the bartender? Are you on the Psychic Friends network or something? Cause guess what--she didn't. For the record, the big girl is a bit of a headache (the 2 times she has been there), but she still has more class in her little, spit-slinging finger then you've got in your whole body. You acted in NO way as passively as you claim, but you can believe whatever helps you sleep at night.
Grow up, grow a pair (tits, balls...whatever) and learn to not act like a goddamn neanderthal in public. If you don't like it, get the hell out. There are plenty of "high-class" bars downtown where you can go act like the bitch you are and instead of the bartender trying to check your ass, you'll get tossed out by a security guard with CHIERS coming to pick you up.
It's sad that you have so many insecurities and so much time to run all over the internet and post the same cut-and-paste review, while making cheap shots at an ESL small business owner. Face it, sweetheart, you were in the wrong. You're lucky you had to deal with her, because if you treated me like that, you'd have been crying in the corner from the verbal lashing you deserved.

There should be a no stars option. My boyfriend and I came here to meet some friends after dinner, a little more dressed up than usual for this place. We walked in and immediately felt profiled. A red Headed female bartender approached us and asked what we wanted to drink. Having taken a minute to pick between the two taps we could see, a decision was made.
I told this bartender that I was surprised there weren't more taps (I haven't been here since I started to drink beer other than pabst). With a very irritated tone she informed me there were around the side and naturally I asked what (it seems that I was supposed to do my own leg work). This was an obvious inconvenience. She named 1 other thing and already we were quick to say," yeah we'll change our oder to that." She got sassy and gave us a sharp "sure".
I apologized and asked her if that would be a problem. ( I work as a bartender too and have an understanding for what kinds of crap you get dealt. This place was not very busy and too, was adequately staffed.) Apparently I seemed snobby. Maybe if I had taken off my jacket and exposed my tattoos I wouldn't have been misinterpreted.
Her response was, " Are you being a C*NT right now?" absolutely baffled I responded, "Actually, no...I'm not" She continued on telling me that if I wanted to be a C*NT then I could leave. I said at this point that I wasn't comfortable staying and explained that I was now going around the corner to grab my friends.
Yelling and screaming that she was calling the cops, she asked the security guard to follow me and escort me out. I didn't fight any of this because I couldn't believe what was happening. Right out of left field. Like a dream or a funny house. I grabbed my friends headed for the door. As I was walking out, some friend of hers starts yelling to me that I was told to leave and then ran after me and spit on the arm of my jacket. I walked out shaking my head and laughing because it was truly the worst and most insane service (or lack of) I have ever had.I still can't believe it.
In conclusion this is a poorly ran establishment, where the staff couldn't care less about servicing customers. I'm sorry this women took me the wrong way, it's really too bad. It's sad that her insecurities would drive her to blow a such a petty situation....... way out of proportion.
Ps. The owner can barely speak english and in his defense tried to justify this bartenders actions by saying that she is "comfortable". That's apparent.
I have been doing karaoke for quite awhile and been to a lot of bars in Portland. This was hands down my BIGGEST disappointment. Everyone I work with has told me about how great this place is. The food and service were meh, not great but not terrible either. The biggest flaw was the DJ they had working. When I walk in and put a song in and wait nearly four hours to sing only to have the DJ blow me off when I finally walk up to ask where I am in the que. After waiting ten minutes for him to acknowledge me and watch him help three other people before giving me a huffy "What do you want?" I was more then done at this point. Then after I asked where I was in the line up I received a snotty "maybe" Can tell you I will never recommend to anyone, nor will I ever be back.
Bar Fly, ladies and gentleman of the audience, I don't think it's fair to call Chopsticks Express frauds. Sure, the karaoke wait is a big problem for everybody. I was waiting to sing for two hours and I had to make the whole time. But I don't blame them. Because one time, I turned into a dog and they helped me. Thank you.
Yesterday was my 21st birthday, and I went out with my mom and my best friend. We stopped at a couple bars first, unsatisfied, before hearing about - and heading over to - Chopsticks. From the moment we got there, everyone was very nice, and very welcoming. I didn't wait hours to sing, and neither did my mom or my best friend. The KJ was incredibly cool, dancing and singing along to every song, and preforming one of his own at 12am. I DIDN'T have to tip to be put on the stage, and I got a look at the order, and the KJ laid them out fairly, and as they came in. This was a Sunday night, and despite huge nerves, and the feeling that I was totally bombing, everyone cheered. The atmosphere was excellent and I'm VERY glad I went. EVERY staff member that I met was awesome, and I'm totally going back!
If you park your car in the Chopsticks parking lot and need to go across the street or anywhere else, GO INTO THE ESTABLISHMENT AND ASK THEM IF YOU CAN DO IT FIRST! If you let the management know what's going on then at least they won't be inclined to have the thing towed as quickly.
That may or may not work with these folks, I don't know. I've only been there a couple of times (and loved it both times!) and I don't drive. I'm just mentioning this in general.
Okay, yes, this place has a long wait for Karaoke when many people are waiting to do Karaoke. Go figure. It's like how you wait in bad traffic when there's a lot of cars on the road.
I've had great times here. I've had okay times here. Earlier in the evening is better if you want to sing, I've enjoyed all the food I've eaten there.
As for the towing scam? I dunno, maybe car drivers should read signs about how parking lots work. Like it or not, a parking lot is private property, and if you leave the property, you might get towed. It's like getting mad at the cop for catching you break the law. Maybe it sucks, but you risk when you break rules. Me personally, my bike has never been towed from the lot. Ha!
this place sucks Went There last Mon., Bartender was a total dick, wouldn't come around the backside of the bar , where I was sitting, put a song in for karaoke, waited an hour and a half, no song, I left. Too cool for me I guess, I'm used to bars where people care about new business,,,,,,
-- Okay, um, bartenders are not wait staff. Bartenders are not cocktail waiters either. You were not being ignored or treated any differently than anyone else - new customer or regular.
The bartender is stationed on the BAR side, not the restaurant side. If you want a drink, you get up off of your fat ass and you go walk over to the bartender. They can get busy and have many other things to do rather than wait on you because you are simply lazy. Jesus.
Additionally, I've been going to Chopsticks off and on for 10 years. Though I know every single person that works there, including the owner, I receive no special treatment when it comes to getting up to sing a song. I wait, just like everyone else. When it's busy, I put in a song, often to wait and never get up. Get over it folks. It's karaoke. It gets busy. I've waited 4 hours to sing at the Galaxy when there were only 5 visible customers when I arrived. If you want to sing that badly, go there before the place is packed at like 8:00 PM and stop whining.
This is the best karaoke spot in PDX. It's not much to look at(or eat at), but the crowd there is awesome! Everyone is very supportive of one another no matter what there singing talent is. The regulars embrace newcomers with open arms and make you feel like an old friend. The bartenders make stiff drinks and the service is super fast. Derek and the hot chick with nice knockers are on point with great customer service. This place is a great spot to hang on the weekend after a long work week.
The measure of a bar is the people in it, I sing like nails on a chalk board. Noone has ever booed hissed or even mad fun. It is a great place to kick back, RELAX (very important) and have a few drinks!!!!
Chopsticks rocks my a** because its the only place in town you can find Icebox 7 nights a week making sweat love to johnny cash, merle haggard, and frank sinatra through the microphone. Derek and Kim ar the best servers ever! The Carptain and Winter are fu*king greatest KJ's in the wolrd
I cant believe that everyone is trashing the best Karaoke bar in Portland! Yeah, you will have a hard time singing on a Friday or Saturday night, you have to get there early. And the washed up old hipsters look like complete idiots, but try talking to a few of them, and they really are not that bad of people in general. If you want to get a drink, ask a cocktail server, or go to the FRONT of the bar, not the back. It is easy. They poor em stiff too. Food is cheap and decent. Thumbs up!
Chopsticks is simply the best karaoke in Porland. Why you may ask? Well, great KJ's who are never selfish and are always smiling. A truly eclectic mix of people - from 21 to 70. No kidding. Very "in" crowd later at night - this means a ridiculous amout of smoke, but overall they are not annoying. the sound system is the best in town as well.
