BarFly's Review of Clyde's Prime Rib
Recent ownership changes and a slight renovation to the Prime Rib have maintained all the retro charms of the old steakhouse, but new attention to music (jazz and R & B, primarily) has enlivened the crowds.
Well-dressed older couples still flock to the classic steakhouse offerings while younger patrons have started to frequent the lounge and forced vegetarian alternatives upon the menu.
Come for the dancing and cross-generational bonhomie.
Live blues and jazz nightly.

I was impressed by the food, drinks and staff at Clyde's, especially the prime rib. Everything was delicious and the booth very comfortable. I didn't stay for the music but it looked like a nice venue for dancing.
Hey, Don't know much about this places history but I caught Ron Steens jam session there Sunday night and had a great time. If you like jazz then this is the place to go. Have a good time. I did.
Ordered fish and chips and had a spider crawling in my french fries! The waitress let Clyde know and it wasn't until we were standing up to leave that he came and said anything to us. This is after he walked by us about 5 times. He took the item off the tab, but didn't offer a free drink on the house or anything. And we wonder why business don't survive..
I went to Clyde's Prime Rib last week on a date and was pleasantly surprised. I have driven past it hundreds of time but never made my way in. We were seated by a very friendly young man and then we were greeted with fresh bread at our table by a charming waitress. She was very attentive and funny. We liked her very much. On top of that, the food was awesome. We started with the steamer clams that were incredibly delicious and then we went on to enjoy the basil halibut and the ny strip steak with blue cheese crumbles. On top of that, the wine was perfect and the waitress's reccomendations were astute and accurate. We will be back!
Good music, nice people and pretty darn good food! I had one complaint and it was promptly taken care of. It has changed since the previous ownership, but it is still good.
The prime rib is alright, but everything else on the menu is garbage. The only thing that is"Fine Dinning" here is the price. They don't even have a chef.
I love live music, especially blues and jazz. Hence, why I seek out the straight bars as the gay bars I usually hit up do not have any live music (too busy spinning Cher and Beyonce). So, I hit this jizzoint up w/ some pals and aside from the fuckin' chain-smoking white/black trash, horrible food and OVERLY loud music, the service was surprisingly good. Drinks were nothing to write home about and overpriced. Lots of fat white girls from Gresham lookin' for their next Tyrone and Jacquan to get pregnant by. My black girl friends warned me that all the bruthas here are scrubs w/ no jobs or cars, and they were right! Like "The Candlelight" but only more low rent (if that's even possible).
We have been visiting Clyde's place since we were dating 45 years ago. Didnt know it was bought by someone elce, but service and food still as good as way back when. Usually go on special occasions.
My friends invited us out to dinner with them for their wedding anniversary. When we sat down, we were greeted by a waitress who was apparentely on some kind of mood altering drugs of the white powder kind. oh and she had a bad attitude too! she didn't fill our waters, and when asked to do so, gave an angry sneer and put warm water in our already ice-less glasses...argh! and the food! omg. terrible. cold veggies, coagulated mashed potatoes, a hunk of tasteless prime rib with (i swear) brown water to dip it in...rubbery overdone steamer clams...it was truly the worst meal i've ever had served to me in a restaurant. our party complained and we were comped for our dinners.(which we had only eaten 2 friggin bites of anyway). they even boxed up the "prime" rib for us, which we didn't take, as we wouldn't feed it to our dogs, it was that bad....
I just have to say, I was presently surprised at the attentiveness of the staff. They just could not do enough for me. Some of the friendliest people that Iíve ever met and the Food was off the chart delicious. After dinner I went into the lounge and enjoyed some great music and great drinks. Prices were reasonable and the service just could not be beat.
Damn, everyone has an off night once in a while and Clyde's is no exception. Been going there for 20 years and can say that I never had a bad meal myself. I moved to the west side of town a few years ago and stopped going but rediscovered the place last year and found it better than ever. Good live music (Barbara Lusch from Jr High School - wow) Anyway, it is nice to have a place like this still making it happen in Portland. BTW, I thought I was the only one who thought the house salad & dressing was the best in the country. Not kidding, it's that good.
Great service, fun music and a really classy atmosphere. Once again I have to give it a thumbs up. My friend had the Prime Rib and said it was the best he ever had. Try the house salad dressing it is to die for!
I stumbled into Clyde's from out of town not really knowing anything about it. The food and service was great, the music was even better. Too bad about the people that didn't like it. I don't eat prime rib all that much, but it was the best I had had in many, many years. I will be back next time I am in Portland...
i did. it sucked, it wasn't that busy and we won't be going back.
p.s. you'd be surprised how big my mouth is.
Obviously you have been there and liked it so....... Why not take it up with the management???? I am sure they won't fold and go under over losing your business, but none-the-less maybe you should inform them of the unhappy experience. I usually do that right when the food is served unsatisfactory in a restaurant, but I have waited to take issue with it if they are busy. Why you didn't mention it to them that night I really can't say. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By the way so sorry to the family of the gentleman who passed, he will obviously be greatly missed in Portland's Culinary world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
maybe they should have been closed for christmas or until they found a quality chef. we've been there numerous times as well, and this was so terrible I won't go back.
Seriously I read the obituary. He died just before Christmas. He was the same long time cook from when the original owner (who sold it to Clyde) had it. So that could be the reason your food was not up to its typical standards. I have been there numerous times and everyone has enjoyed their food tremedously.
i came here for what i thought would be a yummy treat, but something has happened.i don't know if it's clyde (taking ownership) or if he hired a new cook but i paid $65 on x-mas for a meal that tasted like i stood in line at the goddamn mission. seriously, diarrhea was sprayed all over the salmon and steak.
Had a great time with my wife and some friends dancing and having dinner. Will be comming back!
I'm sure life is good Clyde. I played against you at Hillsboro and again in intramurals at OSU if you are the Clyde from Central Catholic from 1972. Best wishes to you. Still keep in touch with your old running mate? Buchanan and me would probably be happy to kick your butts once again on the court! Rick White class of '76 OSU, now living in Cincinnati... but I'll be back and I can still block your shot, even if you have a couple of inches on me... it's the timing son... it's the timing! Write back, Ok? I still remember the Co-Ed league in '75 or '76 and you guys gave us a game in the SECOND HALF!!! Whoops... Good luck on the restaurant. I'll stop in next time into PDX. Cool to read about you in the Alum pages! rick white.
I am a vegetarian...I went to the Prime Rib. Haha. They had nothing on the menu sans meat, yet they created a yummy pasta option just for lil' ole me :) Great customer service to Clyde and company. I hear this place is a portland tradition. Keep it up y'all, it was superb! Stiffer than stiffy drinks.
