BarFly's Review of Egyptian Room (CLOSED)
Location now condos. Yay.
Closed October 1st, 2010. Now open as "Weird Bar."
BARFLY ALERT! The E-Room is closing its doors October 1st, 2010!
Newcomers may despair over butch-centric percentages and hip-hop heavy soundtracks, but Portland's longest-running (and, arguably, only true) lesbian club achieved landmark status through such a hard-drinking, unpretentious casualness.
Men are tolerated, grudgingly, perhaps, over pool and drinks at the divey front bar, dykes and breeders alike haunt the sweeping dance floor and omnipresent Texas Hold ’Em tournaments - are these OLCC mandated? - but the separate Karaoke Room's nightly performances tends to be by, for and, with Mad Lib rules, about the community. New! The ER's social gaming license was approved, so you can play poker for cash, at all hours.
Open 1pm-2:30am Monday-Friday, 4pm-2:30am Saturday & Sunday. Karaoke every night (9pm).
Sundays: karaoke (9pm), plus monthly Texas Hold 'Em championship tournaments on the first Sunday of each month, at 4pm.
Mondays & Wednesdays: Poker Tournaments (no cash, fun prizes, free to enter. 7pm).
Tuesdays: free pool all hours.
Wednesdays: poker tournament, plus "Shotzy and Mug Night" - roll the dice for a $2 shot - if you get doubles, you get two shots for $2. Buy a mug for $1, bring it in for $1 refills every Wednesday, 9pm-12am.
Thursdays: live bands or open mic (every other Thursday), 9pm.
Fridays: dancing and karaoke, plus Bracelet Night! $5 gets you a bracelet good for 5 vodka drinks (upgrade to 5 Three Olives Vodka drinks for $10), 7pm-12am. Saturdays: dancing and karaoke (9pm).

So I just got back. I didn't experience any of the 'straight guy' bs mentioned by others above. I can only say that I did see 2 guidos come into the bar obviously gawking at the lesbians. They were given the stink eye.
Come in w/o an attitude and you'll have a great time.
Okay, so I have to meet a friend of mine who's gay for some karaoke... i was invited. Now, I am straight and married butI have to tell you I am scared shitless of what I am walking into.
Ill keep you posted on how it goes....
what the hell? Men not welcome? Not true. Assholes, however, are another matter. So don't be one and you'll do fine. I took my pal in here for his birthday witha bunch of people, we had a blast singing Karaoke. My buddy brought down the house with an awesome rendition of George Michael's "Freedom"... and those dykes were clapping and screaming their heads off. It's just like anywhere else... be nice, be charming, and bring something to the party, especially if you're in the minority.
what the fuck?, guys like to lick muff too. i had alot in common with those dykes but didnt like me. sharon stout is the dyke from hell, tom
Well its gonna get better soon with the addition of Dj Zodiac in January so come dance yer asses off girls and boyz!!!
I'm really torn about going here. I want to be able to enjoy a lesbian bar and meet girls, but I don't want to support a place that discriminates against guys if they want to hang out too. Sounds kind of juvenile....
Saturday night was my first visit to the Egyptian. I came with my partner and found the atmosphere to be honestly, very friendly. I am quite shy and not used to crowds, so I was reluctant to try it out. I'm glad that I did though. The staff were all very down to earth and all smiles. I'm definetly returning soon!
I went to the E-Room with three friends of mine after term ended. It technically wasn't my first time there, as I had dinner there before, but there's a difference between going someplace to hang out and going someplace to eat.
The food is good for what it is--bar food--and I really did have an awesome time with the girls--those I came with, and those that stopped to say hi. I do agree that classy femmes should probably at least come in a group their first time, because with some people, you just can't tell if they are or not.
Anyway, I didn't have a problem with the service--nothing to complain about, anyway. Also, fun times were had in the Karaoke room.
don't want to be picky but the website link here goes to the wrong page-not even close! Went to the E-room on halloween night for the first time. Probably scewed my opinion so I'm going back again. Bringing my astma inhaler this time too! later...
I've been to the E-room several times, and I have always enjoyed myself there. It does take me back a bit to the old college days in darkened, earthier bars, but you can have a great time there if you choose to. I have to admit that my first solo time there not one lady talked to me for a couple of hours until the gal next to me turned and said "I'm not trying to be rde or anything, but do you know this is a "Lesbian" bar?" I acted shocked and said back, "Well I'll be damned...my wife is gonna love that!" Classy femmes...you may want to tattoo "Yes I am" somewhere obvious on your physique before your first visit. After that, you'll just be one more of the gals.
The only reason this place has remained open is because IT IS the only lesbian bar in town. If someone were to open a club that wasn't as dirty, smoky, nasty, and trampy, ER would go down in flames. Ask anyone and they say, "I don't really like the ER, but it's the only place to go." Check out the place on nights of monthly parties. It's dead. Yes, the staff is friendly...well most the staff-the old timers, the young baby-dykes...they think their $h!t don't stink.
I, along with a slew of others, hope and pray that a newer, better, cleaner, nice smelling club comes along.....
Too smokey, watered down drinks. Friendly staff. Any thing goes here. It's ok for pool but not the place to take a date who has class. PS: throw out the bums who get stinking drunk and obnoxious. Please.
I have been to the E-Room three or four time in the past few months. The drinks are strong and the food is decent. The bartenders are nice but ordering a drink in the Tomb can be hard if you are quiet. It can be a little smoky if its a crowded night but overall I don't find it bad. I would be a little scared to see this place with all the lights on...it could use some remodeling but its just a thought.
I went in this place many, many years ago, after it had been converted from a strip club to a lesbian bar. I remember specifically how the female bartenders worked very diligently to try and make me feel unwelcome because I was born with a penis. So, I continued to go in there from time to time, because after all, gender discrimination is illegal. I remember how the bartender would just stand there and glare at me giving me dirty looks, and how I simply ignored this intentionality, and continued to drink, play pool, socialize, etc. anyway. Finally, one day, the bartender said to me, "Oh, so that's how it is", or something to that effect, because she never got her expected reaction from me as she most intentionally acted in discriminatory manners because I have a penis. Not wise. Guess what, I won!
It's hilarious to sit here and read all the comments about how terrible the music is at the E-Room... I suggest popping by the deejay booth and checking out their song request sheet, which is basically a who's who on the Billboard List. It isn't the DJ, it's the clientele. If you want to hear something other than Timbaland, fucking request it. Don't stand with your back against the wall and your nose in the air.
The ONLY lesbian bar in Portland, the E-Room has been holding it down for twelve years. Nay-sayers and non-smokers aside, they do pretty well for themselves. I don't see any bad reviews here from the hundreds of sweaty gorgeous femmes and butches packing the dance floor every weekend. Saturdays are and have always been killer, and their Fridays are coming up fast with go-go dancers, new dj's, dance contests, and all sorts of fun shit.
Haters, it's better that you stick to frequenting the monthly queer parties... the E-Room looks to be doing just dandy without you.
I have been in the ER many times in my 13 years in Portland. I get the occasional dirty look but the bartenders are always nice to me. I shouldn't be there, though. I'm an alcoholic with 13 years of sobriety. But I get lonely and I've burned out on AA meetings. I drink non-alcoholic beers, diet cokes and watch the crowd. Maybe I'll go tonight...hate the smoke, though...I don't partake in the tobacco and it really reeks in there...
it's a nice place to go if you have a girlfriend... as everyone in there seems to be taken, or has appeared that way every time I've come in. Stopping by there tonight for the hell of it. Haven't seen too many punkish girls, younger girls, or tranny girls... though the tranny boy populus appears high, and plenty of baseball caps... I highly suspect people think I'm straight down there...
While it is a dive and a half, I love this bar. I've been going there for about 8 years, off and on, but lately its been almost every night of the week, and I live in Tigard! With that said, I avoid it like the plague on Friday and Saturday nights. I can't stand huge crowds, and the music they play in the Tomb SUCKS usually. Drinks are good and stiff, food is actually not too shabby. I suppose being a smoker kind of creates a bias, but I don't find the smoke level in the e-room to be that bad.
Well, we only go about once every 6 months or so in hope that it will change, but it never does. Everytime we go it seems all they play is hip hop crap and rap. Music that is degrading to women...hello? Dyke bar??? Please play something you can dance too.....please!!!!!
Ok, I agree about the smoke, and I prefer R&B, hip and trip hop, and not so much techno. But why are there so many comments trashing butches and dykey-dykes? (If it weren't for them...) It's a DYKE bar for heaven sakes! Go to Tart for glitzy babes; but please, clean up the E-Room so I don't endanger my health to go there and be around dykes. Please, make it non-smoking all the time (one day a month is a joke), refurbish, and we will all come back!
After going to this bar, I imagine I have lung cancer. It is so gross in there!! It's dreary and dank inside, with the worst music being played. I felt depressed after going there, a very lame environment with manly women swaggering about. If you like woman who care about themselves and enjoy being a woman, as well as good music and fresh air, skip this place!
Aside from the insecure, chain smoking, wannabe charmers eyeballing you, the place has really improved. Being a lesbian bar, of coarse there will be butch, style-tarded women too cool for you but I still enjoy the football game nights and cold pabst on tap. They are also getting better and diversifying their theme nights to cater to those who can really drink. All in all a cozy place to eye-fight 5 foot butch dykes while sipping on a refreshing beer.
The E-Room is one of the biggest disappointments in the Northwest. The owner(s) are closed minded. They should focus on serving their clientele better. You can't really get into a dance groove because they play everthing and on top of that the music that they do play is so outdated. Where's the hip hop and top 40? They have no excuse for bad music especially with the ability to burn CDs and download music now a days.
Also why do some club owners get comfortable and just settle for the same ole' crap. Why not diversify your clientele base, increase profits and provide a descent venue for all women to enjoy. I've often wondered where all of the women of color are at, especially the femmes. Where are these women? Certainly not at the E-Room. What other clubs are available? Will I ever return to the E-Room probably not. What will I tell others? Don't waste your time, money or gas. Go to Seattle or San Fran.
Hey- were from Seattle and were wondering if anything was planned for Pride the weekend of the 17th. A group of us will be in town and were not sure where to go- is this the place?
I love the E Room. Fun music, good drinks and lots of people to watch. My only complaint is the ventilation. It is very smokey in there and I always have to use eyedrops because my poor eyes hurt so bad. can we get some vents/fans in there?
The E Room is a place where you can hang with friends and be who you are. I like that when I walk in I know some of the people but not all of them. It's pretty packed most of the time but I'd never go on a Friday, to any gay bar for that matter. For some reason, whether is saving themselves for Sat. or their just too cheap, the gay scene sucks at any bar on a Friday, Therefore, don't hate on the E for being fairly empty. There aren't a lot of Super-femmes but there are a ton of Semi-femmes and Sporty-femmes. There's definitely a good amount of dykes to be had as well.
Iíve been kicked out of this bar more than a couple of times for being wasted but they always made sure I got home safely. They care about their people and are friendly and supportive.
On a scale from 1-10 I give it an 8. Only draw backs would be, not enough bathrooms or toilet seat covers (always out) to go around as well as it is a smoke factory but they again any gay bar is because %85 of the Gay and Lesbian population smokes.
Come on out and give it a try. Be outgoing and youíll make friends instantly.
I am a gay man, and I love the ER because it's not only friendly, but the music is better than the standard diva/house crap that other gay bars play. The DJ's mix it up w/ good hip-hop and tries her best to diversify her set. I must admit, she is not very open to requests (unless you are a bull dyke she wants to fuck), but aside from that, it's always been fun for me. Drinks are good, and most of the bartenders are friendly.
However...this joint is SOOOOOOOOOOO SMOKY! Every lesbian who frequents this place is a chain-smoker, and when you leave you will smell as stale and cheap as them!
But, again, have always had fun here, and the Karaoke, aka SCARYoke, is a hoot!
While it is hit or miss, it is still a pretty chill place to go dancing once in a while. If you are looking for a fancy smancy hipster bar where everyone is too cool to talk to you then this is not your place. However, you are are looking for some friendly dykes and some decent dancing, it's all good! Go before 9:00 to avoid cover!
I have been going to ER off and on for about 8 years. I don't smoke so I HATE that part. I am a drinker so I LOVE the heavy hand on the alcohol. I am butch, as most of the women there, so there isn't a lot to look at :-( I'm a hip hop fan from the east coast so the music doesn't work for me. I can dance to anything except constant Techno. I do have to admit that the new DJ on Fridays is the best one they've EVER had because she tries to cater to everyone. Lastly, I am with Lisa Smith's comment about more women that take pride in themselves. CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF!
It sucks that this is P-towns ONLY exclusive dyke bar! So we should be happy i guess? If you're looking for GREAT DJ's and more of a high class hipster scene... check out CRUSH on 14th and Morrison in Southeast pdx. Or holocence on dyke night! E-room is hit or miss.. it's VERY smokey(which is a huge turn off for a lot of p-town queers!)and the music SUCKS for dancing.. it is pop music crap rap hip hop bullshit. Of all the ROCKIN' DJ's the E-Room can't get one?? bummer. But the bartenders are usually nice and the drinks are strong! L-word plays on Sunday nights, which is cool for us who don't have cable. My friends and I were there on Friday night.. and i guess all the straight men flocked in because my 2 friends(who are very femme) were getting humped on the dance floor half the night by stupid boys.. it's not like us queer women don't like men, we just don't like to be grinded on while dancing.. that's why we're at a DYKE bar.. to avoid stupid shit like that!
well have tried this place out on numerous occasions to see a dj, to just get a drink ect. and the staff and patrons are seemingly very unhappy with men gay or straight wierdly enough even when invited. I hear issues!
I've gone there with lesbian friends as well as another straight male, both times I was served and treated very well.
I went there with another male friend to play some pool since we were in the area, we are both straight and thought that it would be no problem. WOW, were we wrong. As soon as bull-D and her lover found out we weren't gay, she threatend us and told us to leave. So much for the whole EVERYONE is welcome vibe. This the same sort of discrimination that gay people cry about when they go to ultra-straight bars. Can't we all just get along? I mean it is Portland right?
Brought some friends there for the first time and it was to smokey, to many women who dont care what they look like and very depressing environment. It could use a face lift and I dont mean plastic surgery.
Not my type of scene. Hoping somebody will open a dyke bar that actually has what can be classified as music, that one can dance to.
The E-room has been hit or miss for me. I'm a married, bisexual woman. If I go there with girlfriends, it's all good. I've taken my husband there just to chill and have a few beers. We never received any acknowledgement, waited for 20 minutes at the bar and couldn't get served. We gave up and left. Don't know if it was an off night or if it was to slight my man. Haven't had this issue at any other gay/lesbian bars. Willing to give the E-room another chance. C'mon girls, don't diss my man!
I love this place! I have never seen hotter girls anywhere in my life! I will be a regular forever!!!!
terrible service, bad prices, awful music, tacky (and not in the good way)decor. And the women are....let's just say not my type. This place is the epitome of seedy (and not in the good way) small-town dyke bar circa 1982. utterly depressing.
And, in fact, I have! I love the E-room. Great dance floor, always open to grrrrrls, breeders and men-folk alike. i've never had a bad experience there (and more than a few good ones). BTs are, for the most part, really nice.
My only complaint? I wish I'd get hit on a little more often. (that one time I sang karaoke and got money down my shirt doesn't count.)
Love your women! The E-room is full of wonderful women, the staff is awesome they make great drinks. The owner (Kim) runs a great place with a feel good atmosphere and always has a great sense of humor!
This used to be "Dooley's Strip Club", whose motto was "We rip off the other guy, and pass the savings on to you."
The transition period must have been awkward; when guys were expecting to walk into a strip club. I went in here and looked around hoping to find "lipstick lesbians" locked in an embrace, but all I saw were tough looking chicks with short hair smoking cigarettes and acting manly. They still have strippers here sometimes too, but men aren't allowed in the audience. Really. They're special lesbian strippers.
This is the best lesbian bar in portland, to me it seems to be the only one, but I love it, the atmosphere is very friendly, the music is great, and the drinks and food are tasty. I highly recommend it to have fun and see hot girls.
