BarFly's Review of Hi Hat Lounge (CLOSED)
The Hi Hat has closed. See Lu's.
Dark and drinky downmarket lounge, heavy on the chinoiserie - it's all black, red and gold, dragons galore (take a walk out back for a peek at the Dragon Boats, which are stored here inbetween runs on the Willamette). Great service, cheap, strong drinks! Karaoke everynight.

Still a good time waiting to happen. Karaoke 7 nights a week from 9-2pm serving food/drinks till 2.30pm. The sports bar is pretty amazing and they start Texas Hold-em 7 nights a week in August. But, it's not the Hi Hat, or New Kings Buffet. It's Lu's Sports Bar and Lounge. Full disclosure: I am the marketing manager and long time customer although not as long as many that still come in here.
I come here about once a week for drinks with a friend. I don't know if the waitresses are ripping us off or not, but as far as I know, their well drinks are $3.25 a pop even at happy hour. However, you'll only need maybe three to get good and happy. All the waitresses and bartenders are great and make good drinks except the one that wears her bluetooth earpiece all night. She must have some sort of seething hate for me (don't know why, I always tip good) so she pours the weakest drinks I've ever had. I try to get all my drinks before she comes on shift. I haven't tried any of the food, but people say it is good and the onion rings (my favorite) look delicious! Also, food is cheap off the happy hour menu.
I like it, service is great and the food is even better! As for the people who think the bar smells like old beer, your CRAZY! Besides it's a bar! If you don't like it don't go...as for me I love it!
At first impression, we thought, it's a dive, but it seems close knit... boy were we right!!! My boyfriend and I met my sister here for her birthday beers, he and I got up to sing a song, and waited patiently, drinking more beer, eating dinner, for the other song to come up that we'd indicated we'd like to sing. We watched nearly two full rotations of "regulars" sing and decided waiting wasn't worth driving home with all the wackos after bar time. While the song selection is limited, the KJ is somewhat disinterested, and the clientele a little young compared to our normal hangouts, it wasn't overall bad... I didn't smell the 'old beer' someone had complained of, but I did have to pull over momentarily on the way home because my eyes were burning too bad to see straight (or crooked for that matter)... don't get me wrong, I'm a smoker too... but a little ventillation goes a long way. My helpful suggestions for drawing and maintaining new customers: KJ, stick to your rotation. Obviously we were there to sing. Obviously you have favorites. I personally never tip the KJ on the first song, and usually tip $2-5 for a second song, and gradually better depending on the interaction you provide with the customers. You had none... you lagged when songs ended, you were usually sitting in a booth and didn't stand up until the credits were rolling. With so many people eager to sing, which is the service you're attempting to provide, more attention would help your flow. That's about it. The beer was cold, food was hot. Overall it was a good visit. I'd come back for food, but not Karaoke, as it left much to be desired.
Did I forget to mention the free chicken wings everynight (some people like 'em!) Also, pretty good happy hour menu!
OK, so there are no new reviews on here - so here you go: the hi hat is a pretty cool place, but I guess it's because I am a regular who likes hairspray drinks and smoke filled rooms. Fridays and Saturdays are usually lots of fun, but sometimes there are too many people and you dont get a lot of songs in. Most of the equipment is being updated slowly, and you can even bring in your own CD - but there are rarely problems. I don't know about the other idiot reviewers, but I can't smell shit for "old beer" just smoke, smoke, and smoke... but who cares? If you don't want to smell smoke and/or beer, then don't go to a bar... DUH! As for the "stakeout" deal.. dont be a fucking idiot and drive drunk, and you don't have a problem... ummm, what else? Everyone is pretty friendly once you are friendly with them, waitresses and regulars alike... its all for fun!
If you are lucky enough to go there on a night where I am singing Frank Sinatra, you are in luck. Otherwise you can at least spend the night laughing at the regulars who take it all too seriously. Either way it should be fun, and you should be able to work up enough liquid courage to sing.
upon being assaulted by the smell of old beer upon entering the place (doesn't ANYONE think to shampoo the fuckin' carpets!!??), I took a look at the karaoke book and the equipment. Talk about a letdown! If you're a serious karaoke-holic, my advice is to pass on this lamo spot!
Bar is okay, service and food. KJ is a weenie. Worst of all, Tigard Po-Po watch the place closely and are usually parked across the street at 2:30 waiting to say hello to anyone who climbs behind the wheel.
I'm told that Hi Hat now has karaoke 7 days per week. That's the good part. Very smoky. Throw your clothes in the laundry 'cause the next day they will smell awful. As of June '05 these folks were having equipment problems. The drive for the larger older Pioneer disks wasn't working, so if some of your songs were on these, too bad. You'd better bring smaller disks of your own or hope that the DJ's version is not wierd, unexpected key, etc. Also, the waitress working that night was not at all friendly and I had to ask for my change. Not recommended.
