BarFly's Review of Vault Martini
The assets secured in this handsome bar include an 80+ item cocktail menu (with table of contents, even!), a staff of artful pros creating the libations, and divinely comfortable neo-deco styling, most reminiscent of a set from King Vidor's Fountainhead. Kind of feels like a manly spa, or the lobby of an expensive boutique hotel. Not a bad seat to see and be seen in the joint!
Dully generic ambient soundtrack could use some livening up. Smokers will be accomodated shortly with climate-controlled sidewalk seating. Fireplace (topped with Cocteau Twins' album art) in effect, given weather. Wheelchair friendly. Full menu served till 11:30pm, with desserts and appetizers till close.
4pm Monday-Sat, till 1am Mon-Wed, till 2am Thu-Sat.
$4 selected martinis and cocktails, + $5 bubbly drinks and margaritas, 4-7pm M-F.

Getting to Vault Martini

I have been a fairly frequent visitor here as I love me a foo-foo martini. However the last 2 times I have been there (weekday happy hour) there has only been ONE server/bartender spread WAAAYYYY to thin among the 10-12 parties. Everyone last night was waiting much too long for service, waters, refills, and finally the bill. Though she seems nice, the bartender cannot make these muddled & shaken martinis AND take good care of all the tables. Every guest around us was annoyed & we all began to talk amongst ourselves about the need for more help. If Vault doesn't get this straightened out, you will lose me forever...and a lot of others I'd wager, especially the guests last night.
And you like a crafty martini, you ought to pay this place a visit at least once.
The food menu has some tasty items on it, and the martini list is long enough to have something for everyone. A word of caution, though. I've been twice. First time I had great martinis, second time they were most certainly watered-down.
A good place to go if you like watching Pearl District folks walk around. They got big, aquarium-like windows that look onto the sidewalk.
Both the cocktail and food menu's are filled with delicious and innovative treats! The happy hour is reasonably priced and filled with taste sensations! And best of all, Chantelle! Thank you Vault for all of these wonderful things!
Being a native Californian, I loved the Vault! It reminded me of San Diego, LA, SF all rolled into one! And the martini selection is amazing!
Best Bar in town, best service in town, best drinks in town. If you don't like Vault then get your ass back to Greshman or Beaverton. Friendly as hell and an ever stream of people coming and going!
Nothing wrong with the service on my 2 visits but its too small. The clientele is pretty pretentious on weekends. Persian guys in silver shirts galore.
Prime location and an amazing happy hour makes this place solid. We have been there a few times now and never had a problem with service. Being in the industry myself, sometimes I think these people have no idea how to be a nice customer, then get mad when their server responds in kind. Be nice, order promptly, tip well. This is not rocket science people!!
The drink menu is obviously the whole reason to go to this place. I made the mistake of going there on a first Thursday night and it was incredibly packed, like waaay too packed. The ambiance is nothing special. I had no problems with the staff. The drinks are really good though.
While Vault has a great menu and great drinks the service was EXTREMELY lacking! I have worked in the customer service industry for many years and am pretty understanding when someone has a bad day or two but the service was just ridiculously bad. Our first waitress was fine, but our second server was TERRIBLE. After asking twice for waters for our whole table, he only brought one filled water after about 15 min when the rest of our glasses were empty, was rude and very unattentive the whole time, and messed up our drinks a couple times with no apology. But the worst part was when we tried to cash out he refused to split our bill and then just left us at the bar trying to figure out what to do. After trying to pay 4 seperate times and being completely ignored, we simply left and will never go back there again. If you want a good, strong martini with good service and atmosphere hit up the brazen bean...its much more chill and they know good service!
I love Vault! But...only for Happy Hour during the week... not cuz i am cheap, but because it's empty rather than full of Pearl drones and Bridge & Tunnel rejects trying to floss with their $20 budget for the night. Mon nights are awesome as they are never crowded..svc/food/drinks are top notch. And PLEASE, Portland, if you want good service, be nice, smile, and TIP! 20% is not much to ask for...if you can't afford it, then keep your fuckin cheap ass @ home!
Wannabe NY or LA bar,,, get a clue, don't wear all black. A lot of people acting like they have cash until they get the $50 bill, leave a $2 tip then get into their Hyundai excel and drive home
My coworkers took me to Vault as a going away party, and I got freakin' trashed!
I don't know what those other people are talking about when they say they've gotten atitude from the servers, because everytime i go there I'm totally impressed. The cocktailers are cute, give fast service and never forget even a napkin or a glass of water. they're always on it. Plus, the drinks are freakin' awesome. I'm hammered after one and a half martinis. I get something different everytime and I'm always thrilled with my choice. :-)
It’s easy to catch someone on a bad day, especially someone in the service industry. That said, it is no surprise that Vault appears to be emptier and emptier on Friday and Saturday nights, spotted only with late 30s somethings on dates. Our waitress, every time we’ve been, amused herself by staring (blankly) off at the walls, was not familiar with their drink menu and couldn’t even dignify our requests with a response. Unforgivable. Avoid it and hit up Brazen Bean for a better martini.
This bar is like the anti-portland. I think that they shipped the servers in from New York City! The only reason I gave the service a 2 instead of a 1 is because the bouncer was a nice guy. The servers were snotty and rude. I was very sad because I had heard that the drinks were great. But I didn't even get that far because I was so disappointed by the rudeness of the servers that my friends and I left. This could be a great hangout. But the condescending workers gave me a bad taste!
I go there often for their habanjero martinis...yum!! Plus you can't beat the staff. My friend & I went there for martinis and ordered a pizza to split. We get our pizza with goat cheese on it, which was not supposed to be on there at all (s'posed to be mozzerella). So, we alert the bartenderess who was helping us, and she ordered a new one for us and let my girlfriend finish the mistake pizza. Well, the cook comes out and delivers the correct pizza to me and says, "here ya go-- good way to get a free meal, huh?" My friend and I were surprised but not all that pissed off or anything. We still wanted to let our bartenderess know what he said, so we told her. She went & told the owner, and not only did we get an apology from her AND the owner for the cook's behavior, we got a "forced" apology from the cook, two free martinis, she comped the food, AND she gave us a $50 gift card with their compliments!!! My friend and I were extremely surprised & happy, especially since we would've been just fine with the free drinks & food to begin with.
Guess that's what happens when you live in the snootsville Pearl: everyone expects perfection and compensation when their asses aren't constantly kissed!!
I liked everything about this place except it's size! It is WAY too small and you cannot move without bumping into someone, hoping that you don't spill your drink! Otherwise they make great drinks and have a good crowd of people!
It could have attitude, but Vault is a treasure chest of a neighborhood bar with imagination and good manners. Wait staff are unbelieveably courteuous, drinks are exactingly prepared, and the bathroom wallpaper deserves its own review.
