Oregon Revisiting Sobriety Checkpoints

According to KATU, those neo-prohibitionists at MADD along with some make-a-name-for-myself-the-children! legislator are re-visiting the idea of sobriety checkpoints. Despite the oversized logs that were overdue for removal, this legislator instead opted to pull statistics out of MADD's ass.

I once spent nearly two depressing years living in Northern California where checkpoints are legal. It was a grand production for sure. MADD was out in full effect with brochures, Jr. Deputies and over-the-hills wanting to pick up some O.T. were armed with flashlights and breathalyzers, waiting to waive anyone with their papers through.

Within 15 minutes time from when the first car drove through the checkpoints, all the bars in town knew where the checkpoint was, passed the info to their customers, who passed the info to their friends, and vice versa. Drunk drivers simply avoided the route. Eventually, the PR department needed a new way to label these ineffective intrusions, so the re-branded them as "Educational Checkpoints", which aside from inconveniencing sober drivers while violating the 4th amendment, "instructed" said sober drivers that they should not drive drunk. Ironically, on nights when there were no checkpoints, routine traffic patrols often made significantly MORE DUII arrests.

The chronic drunk drivers are going to avoid them. A cheaper (and more economically stimulating) way to discourage drunken driving is to earmark those funds for either saturated patrols or donate it to help promote non-profits like Ride On (which gets you AND your car home)

They also use it as a way to harass bars. They like to pick a busy bar and put a sobriety checkpoint right in front of it. On a Saturday night. Nobody comes in. Would you? This also fucks over the servers who were counting on the money they were going to make that night. They don't care, we're just lowlife bar workers, causing people to sin. Are there any sites for people who hate MADD and Alcoholics Anonymous?
