Virginia Cafe is Going Down

I heard about this weeks ago, but neglected to post anything so it was nice to recieve Anabel's reminder today:

If you haven't been listening to the news, the Virginia Cafe will be closing to make way for another unfortunate "development" courtesy of Mr. Moyer of the "tearing down the old Fox Theater/Hamburger Mary's/Crocodile Records block for the Fox Tower" fame. He's got a vision for a 35 floor tower which will significantly block sunlight to Pioneer Square. Never mind that the block was available due to the desire to make the north and south blocks connect.

Ahem.

So, the lovely Sodapop Princess Brandy, my cohort in all things boozy, and I will be scheduling happy hours throughout the coming weeks until we lose our beloved Virgin, or as I endearingly call her, La Virgin de los Borrachos. Come and drink a few alms to Saint Monica (pictured below), our patron saint of alcoholics. Maybe she'll intervene and make believers of us all. After a few bottles of whiskey that is. Consider the karma we can unleash. ;)

Sweet old bars being removed for shit-tastic development has been a common theme lately it seems. And it's not that I'm against development, it's just that this kind of development seems to fuck over our city's character. I'm imagining a shitty ass martini bar/bistro in place of the Virginia and it makes my stomach churn.

I remember watching the 2000 presidential election there one cold and rainy night, which, if I recall correctly, was the last I probably cared about such things. So I'll be joining the Anabel happy hour crew today because I haven't been there in awhile and now I feel like I've squandered my drinking time

Speaking of lameass downtown office building restaurants, a few weeks ago I noticed a place on (4th/5th/6th?) and Columbia called "Steamers" that had a sign that said "Steamers Dumplings". I found it strange that such a fecal name would be written in such a space age font.
